Vetrate Artistiche Toscane is a company based in Siena (Italy) which specialises in the creation of stained, painted and fused glass. The Studio handles original commissions and restoration work (classical and modern stained glass) in both religious and secular subjects. Fused glass projects are also a part of our production. The apprenticeship periods last one or two months according to student’s choice (provided the slot is available). Contact us for available space. Although the scheme is of particular benefit to the beginner and intermediate; advanced and professional glass artists have found the apprenticeship to be useful to enhance their skills and exchange ideas. SLOW ARCHITECTURE AND PLACE, EXHIBITION
Slow Architecture and Place is an exhibition responding to current challenges regarding our relationship with our built environment. The exhibition is on a typical canal boat, and is currently travelling from the Shannon to Dublin along the Grand Canal, making stops in various locations on the way. Featuring the work of glass artist Róisín de Buitléar, the exhibition will reach Dublin on 21 October.

The aim of this 7-day Master Class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work - a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique. In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deep-slumping into 3-step ceramic moulds, the beginning will be with pencil and paper, drawing from the immediate environmental stimuli surrounding The Glass Studio with mark-making realised through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, stringers, powders and confetti.

Artspace Studio Residencies are available via an application process to artists and other related professionals not otherwise directly involved in the Artspace Gallery Program. On average two residential and four non-residential studios are allocated across the year in this manner.
Objectives
The key objectives of the Artspace Studio Residency Program are to provide subsidised studio facilities for contemporary visual arts practitioners, curators, theorists and writers; to support the development of new work for exhibition at Artspace and elsewhere; to facilitate professional development opportunities for artists; and to foster dialogue and exchange between artists, writers, theorists and curators. As in all areas of Artspace activity the Studio Residency Program is guided by a commitment to cultural diversity and to a principle of support for artists ranging from early career to established practitioners. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are encouraged to apply. Practitioners working in related disciplines such as craft and design are encouraged to apply, as are museums, galleries, art colleges, contemporary art, craft and design organisations and cultural support agencies. Curators, critical writers and cultural theorists are also encouraged to apply for studio residencies.
Residencies by Application
These residencies are generally offered for periods of one, three and six months. Residency lengths are negotiable, but where studio space is limited preference is given to longer-term residencies.
Residencies offered under this program do not involve gallery-based outcomes at Artspace, however artists undertaking residencies under this program may be invited to take part in other Artspace Public Program and Outreach activities. Artspace Studio Residencies are available via an application process to artists and other related professionals not otherwise directly involved in the Artspace Gallery Program. On average two residential and four non-residential studios are allocated across the year in this manner.
Objectives
The key objectives of the Artspace Studio Residency Program are to provide subsidised studio facilities for contemporary visual arts practitioners, curators, theorists and writers; to support the development of new work for exhibition at Artspace and elsewhere; to facilitate professional development opportunities for artists; and to foster dialogue and exchange between artists, writers, theorists and curators. As in all areas of Artspace activity the Studio Residency Program is guided by a commitment to cultural diversity and to a principle of support for artists ranging from early career to established practitioners. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are encouraged to apply. Practitioners working in related disciplines such as craft and design are encouraged to apply, as are museums, galleries, art colleges, contemporary art, craft and design organisations and cultural support agencies. Curators, critical writers and cultural theorists are also encouraged to apply for studio residencies.
Residencies by Application
These residencies are generally offered for periods of one, three and six months. Residency lengths are negotiable, but where studio space is limited preference is given to longer-term residencies.
Residencies offered under this program do not involve gallery-based outcomes at Artspace, however artists undertaking residencies under this program may be invited to take part in other Artspace Public Program and Outreach activities. Suzannah Vaughan, received a BDes (Honours) from the National College of Art & Design in 2003 and a MA in Visual Arts Practice from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology 2008. In 2007 her work was selected for Open Ev+a 2007, A Sense of Place, curated by Klaus Ottmann and during which she was awarded the Ev+a '07 Belltable One Person Exhibition Award. Her work has been purchased by art collectors and institutions including the National Museum of Ireland. In 2004 she was awarded the prestigious Golden Fleece Award and was one of three emerging artists awarded the 2009 Glass Art Society Emerging Artist Lecture Award.

Glass in the South West &
Artist/Curators and why ‘On The Edge’
Chinks will provide an in-depth review of artists working in glass in South West England and will describe how this research influenced her curatorial choices for the exhibition, On the Edge.
Today the greatest number of glass artists in England is based in the South West where there has been a long tradition, particularly in the Bristol area. By contrast the medium as a taught field is more recent in Ireland; they have a strong rapport with Europe and America but fewer connections with England. It demonstrates how rich and stimulating these regions are, particularly for experimentation.
On the Edge celebrates the work of glass artists working in Ireland and South West England. It includes examples by artists already established and highly regarded internationally, as well as emerging artists whose work reflects a commitment to self-expression and integrity.
Chinks Grylls, holds an MAFA in Art and Architecture from the University of East London. She exhibits nationally and internationally working with glass, light, shadow and mixed media. As a member of the International Women’s Glass Workshop she exhibited in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, for the European City of Culture,2008. In 2009 she exhibited in Chartres, France, ’Capter La Lumière’ and, in Cheltenham, Swansea and Torquay with the touring exhibition ‘On The Edge’, Contemporary Glass from Ireland and South West England,’ which she co-curated with glass artist, Mary Mackey and Sophie Wilson, of Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery.

The Spaced Out exhibition responds to the vast space of the unit at the ILAC while commenting on the wider issue of vacant spaces in Dublin and beyond. Spaced Out unites thirteen artists who look at notions of space via their own chosen medium. The exhibition will take the form of a large-scale group show incorporating painting, photography, installations and video projections.

The RDS National Crafts Competition in its present form has been held annually since 1968 to promote Irish craft and design. My work is an enquiry into tactility and mark-making on the surface of glass. I have focused on mould-blowing as a spontaneous process to jag, dint and crinkle glass forms. In some of my pieces I have ground back the raised areas to create marks and lines to describe functional objects.
By using opaque colours the textured surface becomes vibrant and strong. This gives me the opportunity to make colour tactile and in doing so evoke the sense of touch. In other pieces I have left the surface alone allowing it to influence the overall object.
The process of making the moulds is an equally important part of my practice, they are made from textile, clay and plaster and can only be used once. The energy and gesture used in making these unique moulds is reflected in the vessels they produce. I do a lot of drawing, in a sense the surfaces of the glass objects I make inherit the qualities of a ‘drawing’.

MA IN DESIGN HISTORY AND MATERIAL CULTURE, NCAD
Applications are invited for the Masters in Design History and Material Culture at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.
The MA in Design History and Material Culture is a pioneering course that examines the history of design and material culture from the eighteenth century through to the present day, providing a unique forum for the study of objects, architecture and interiors within their social, historical and theoretical contexts.
This taught course draws on the wide-ranging academic expertise of staff in the fields of the history of decorative arts and design, glass history, dress history, architectural history and material culture, and benefits from close relationships with a wide range of museums and cultural institutions. Seminars and lectures on campus at NCAD are complemented by a study trip to London and sessions at the National Museum of Ireland and various historic properties.

By using only clear glass, sometimes juxtaposed with black glass Jarman - www.angelajarman.com – emphasises form, texture and structure pushing forward the boundaries of glass as a sculptural medium. This class will specialise in creating form and texture with cast glass. It will be an intensive and focused look at what is possible to achieve in a week. We will start with basic clay and wax modelling before going onto more specialised mould-making techniques. The emphasis will be on working with wax and moulded textures and translating these models through lost wax casting to explore the qualities of the glass, particularly surface pattern and texture.
The class will be fully comprehensive demonstrating every stage of working; however for those with experience, a more detailed approach can be taken with lots of useful hints and tips.

INTER-CHANGES: CRAFT AND CONTEXT, SYMPOSIUM AND EXHIBITIONS
Inter-Changes: Craft and Context is a symposium running in NCAD, Dublin on the 13th and 14th of April 2010, supported by the Fulbright Commission and the Crafts Council of Ireland. Intending to deepen the discourse surrounding contemporary craft in Ireland and internationally, speakers included Glenn Adamson and Arline Fisch, as well as glass artists Wayne Stratmann, Geoffrey Mann, Renata Pekowska and Suzannah Vaughan. While the symposium goes on, visitors can also see glassblowing demonstrations by Roisin deBuitlear, joined by Derek Smith, Danny Murphy and Tony Hayes of Irish Handmade Glass, Waterford City. Accompanying the symposium are two exhibitions running in Dublin city. The current uncertainty caused by the early retirement of the Minister of Arts, Sport & Tourism is a cause for concern. We have looked for clarification and confirmation that there will be a replacement minister in place in the forthcoming cabinet reshuffle. We haven’t been able to get a definite response on that. ! !
For this reason we ask that you join us in making contact with your local government representative and ask that they lobby for the retention of an Arts minister at the Cabinet table.
We suggest that you personalise the following paragraph with details of the importance that you place on the role of having the arts represented in cabinet.
"In the forthcoming reshuffle, the government must show its commitment to the arts by the appointment of a Minister of Arts, Sport & Tourism to replace outgoing Minister Cullen"

TEXTILE PRINTING WORKSHOPS, DUBLIN
Sat/Sun 17th/18th April
These workshops will teach various approaches to creating multi-layer surface designs on fabrics using different printing techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to combine their own graphics and photographic images with cloth to create highly individual fabrics. The resulting fabric can be a finished artefact or the basis for embroidery or other embellishments .
Multiple processes, combining different types of fabrics and papers will be used, including, Photo Transfers – using photocopies, acrylic medium, silkscreens, thermofax screens, rollers and brushes.
Transfer Paints – designs monoprinted or painted onto paper then ironed onto fabric to create the design. Water Soluble crayons – used with rubbing plates [e.g. involving card, string, pva] silk screens and acrylic medium.
All specialised equipment will be provided.
Cost of Workshop: 120 euros

The essence of the scholarship is to enable the candidate to develop within the context of the creative marketplace and then to move forward with their own business. NUUTAJARVI ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAMME, FINLAND: CALL
This residency offers studio glassblowers and artists an opportunity to work with hot glass in Nuutajärvi Glass Village, Finland from the 6th to the 16th August 2010. In Nuutajärvi you will find one of Iittala Group's glassworks, Tavastia Glass School and Lasikomppania aka "The Glass Company", a local glass cooperative. Lasikomppania was founded in 2003 to provide facilities for independent glassmakers and artists and to make Nuutajärvi more well known as a glass centre in Finland and abroad.
The residency covers ten days. It includes five days in the hot shop for glassblowing or hot casting with clear glass. The artist is responsible of travel expenses and additional materials. The hotshop contains two gloryholes with diameters of 17,7" and 11,8", three annealers and a tank furnace. You will be using Glasma C48 pellets. Capasity of glass use is max. 100kg a day. Accommodation and breakfast are provided for one person in the guesthouse.
The chosen artist is to have a presentation, of his/her work in Nuutajärvi, if possible. (For example a slideshow etc). The Glass Company will also hold one piece of work for its collections for future exhibitions.

ARTLINKS BURSARY AWARDS 2010: CALL
ArtLinks has announced a series of bursaries and awards for for 2010 for ArtLinks members based in the five ArtLinks partner counties of Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.
Four ArtLinks Bursary Awards will be awarded per ArtLinks county to individual practitioners or arts groups in the categories of visual arts, film, dance, literature, music and drama/theatre. One award of up to E3,000 and three awards of up to E1,000 are available. ArtLinks Bursary Awards are designed to support the professional development of creative practitioners and decisions on these awards will be made by an independent panel.

Four ArtLinks Bursary Awards will be awarded per ArtLinks county to individual practitioners or arts groups in the categories of visual arts, film, dance, literature, music and drama/theatre. One award of up to E3,000 and three awards of up to E1,000 are available. ArtLinks Bursary Awards are designed to support the professional development of creative practitioners and decisions on these awards will be made by an independent panel.

CILL RIALAIG PROJECT'S EXHIBITION AND RETREAT: CALL
Cill Rialaig, the artist's retreat in Ballinskelligs, Co.Kerry is offering two opportunities to glass and ceramic artists. Firstly, in association with the Crafts Council of Ireland, the programme is reserving a number of places for glass and ceramic artists to spend a summer retreat at the arts centre in 2011, with access to workshop equipement and kilns provided. Also, the centre is going to run an exhibition of ceramic and glass work from May to August of 2010, and are open to any artists working in these media to submit up to four pieces for this exhibition. SCULPTURE IN THE PARKLANDS LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Sculpture in the Parklands has recently received Heritage Council funding for an innovative education programme that explores the boundaries between art, science and technology. Internationally renowned artist and scientist Brandon Ballengee will deliver an education programme over a two-week period from July 19th to July 30th that will focus on the rich biodiversity of the Lough Boora Parklands. The programme will include a week-long education programme for primary school age children, one-day workshops for all ages and a series of lectures and night walks to discover the rich nocturnal biodiversity of the Boora bogs.
Since 1996, Ballengee has collaborated with scientists to create hybrid environmental art/ecological research projects. He is directly involved with field study research and uses the visual impact of science to engage the public in a discussion of broader environmental issues.
During Brandon’s residency he will install a large canvas screen into the sculpture park entitled Love Motel for Insects. The installation will use ultra violet lights on the enormous blank canvas to attract insects and this will create an opportunity for public interaction with nocturnal arthropods, which are not often seen. This is an ongoing project that has been installed across the world from tropical rain forests, inner city bus stops, Brownfield sites, Scottish Highlands, German city centres and Venetian boats as part of the Venice Biennial. At each site the insects arrive onto the canvas to reproduce and create pheromone paintings! Members of the public will be invited to participate in night walks to the Love Motel installation and Brandon will talk about our nocturnal insect friends as well as document the rich insect biodiversity in t! he landscape. The last weekend of the residency will culminate with an Insect Festival, which will exhibit the artwork and insect documentation over the two preceding two weeks.

On the Edge, an exhibition of contemporary glass by artists from Ireland and South West England, a touring exhibition organised by Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, Chinks Grylls and Mary Mackey,
in partnership with the Crafts Council of Ireland, moves to the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin. The exhibition opens on 27th March, with a preview at 3.00 pm on Sunday 28th March, and runs until Sunday 25th April, after which it moves to the Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford.

The successful candidate will join a unique Glass and Ceramics department, which is the largest in Europe, with world and internationally significant research in glass, and internationally significant research in ceramics. We welcome glass and/or ceramic research proposals for this three year AHRC Doctoral Studentship. Part time study five year applications will also be considered.
Glass and Ceramics has a lively cohort of c30 PhD students, five AHRC funded. This AHRC Doctoral Studentship is the second of five, to be award annually, 2009-2013. Each student has a workstation and, with support, undertakes individual research study.
Research students benefit from the University’s generic research support and research skills training. Art and Design (Prof Beryl Graham) and Glass and Ceramics (Prof Kevin Petrie) provide specialist training. We organise a biennial UK Glass and Ceramics Research Students’ Conference, alternating with an in-house presentation week.
Professional Development (Prof Peter Davies) and Enterprise are addressed by Creativitiworks, which supports creative business. We expect an agreed return to the department, which also addresses the student’s career development and
aspirations.

INTENSIVE SUMMER CLASSES BEGIN MAY 17 AT PITTSBURGH GLASS CENTRE
Renowned Artists from Australia and Mexico to Seattle Scheduled to Teach Summer intensive classes at Pittsburgh Glass Centre (PGC) begin on May 17 and run through August 13, 2010. PGC offers intensive one-week glass classes with renowned artists as instructors. The cost for summer classes at PGC is $650 for one-week classes if paid by April 15 ($700 after April 15). For the advanced student, there is an emphasis on project design and development of more advanced skills using the glass department and the library facilities. Each student is encouraged to undertake his or her own individual projects throughout the course. Beginners or advanced are both welcome.

The intention of this project is to commission a 2-D or 3-D one piece of site-specific visual artwork for the school. The concept is for an imaginative, child-friendly, timeless piece sensitive to the particulars of site, and context.
The commission sum is for €15,000 and is to cover all fees, material costs, installation, insurances and expenses for the entire project.
The grant will be paid in three equal installments:-
1. When the commission has been awarded
2. Mid-way through the project
3. Upon completion of the project
