WHEATON ARTS FELOWSHIP,
PHILADELPHIA
The CGCA Fellowship Program at WheatonArts is a professional level program providing focused and self-directed artists working in glass with a concentrated period of time to work alongside their peers. Fellows work toward a common goal of advancing their careers through the perfection or refinement of techniques needed to develop a new or expanded body of work. The CGCA program is an environment where we provide the facilities, equipment and a technical orientation; however we do not have technical assistance on hand.
Artists have the use of private studios and excellent facilities within a respectful sanctuary of concentrated time. This is an exceptional opportunity for artists to utilize one of the finest facilities of the glass medium, known internationally. Not only do artists get exceptional access to these facilities and various process mediums, but they also receive generous stipends, private studios, technical assistance, comfortable housing and institutional support. In addition, they are embraced by a dedicated and warm staff, all on a beautiful 65-acre campus that is truly a creative sanctuary, just 45 minutes south of Philadelphia.
The application is simple and the jury process exceedingly sensitive and fair. Only ten C.G.C.A. fellowships are given per year but the process is free, easy and surprisingly open. The deadline is 25th October 2012.

ENGAGING WITH GLASS, TRAVER GALLERY, TACOMA
The Traver Gallery in Tacoma is proud to serve as the only United States venue for Engaging with Glass; the first comprehensive survey of Irish glass art in over a decade. The exhibition brings together a broad spectrum of work in glass, ranging from beautifully executed decorative objects to conceptual installation pieces incorporating video elements.
Originally presented at the Solstice Arts Center in Meath,
Ireland, Engaging with Glass was organized by Solstice director
Belinda Quirke, along with artists Caroline Madden and Deirdre Rogers.
Irish artists working at home or abroad, as well as foreign artists
living and working in Ireland, are included in the exhibition, which was
juried by Dr. Audrey Whitty, Curator of Ceramics, Glass and Asian
Collections at the National Museum of Ireland and Tina Oldknow, Curator
of Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass.
In essays included in the full-color catalog produced
alongside the exhibition, juror Audrey Whitty notes that the show
reflects an international trend to marry concept with an exceptional
level of technical skill, while Tina Oldknow highlights two major themes
seen in the show: narrative work addressing memory and time and objects
exploring various perspectives on abstraction.
Seattle artist Paula Stokes, whose work is included in the
show, was instrumental in bringing Engaging with Glass to the
United States. After traveling to Ireland to attend the exhibition
opening in Meath, Stokes was convinced that the work deserved to be seen
by a wider audience and approached the Travers about mounting the show
in their Tacoma location. Working with Solstice Art Center director
Belinda Quirke, Stokes secured funding from Culture Ireland and the
Crafts Council of Ireland to bring the exhibition to Tacoma.
The Seattle/Tacoma arts community has shown a great deal of
enthusiasm for the exhibition, and several public programs have been
developed around it. Dr. Caroline Madden, one of the exhibition's
organizers and an artist featured in the exhibition, will teach a Master
Artist class at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle from April 13 - 15.
Madden will also be featured as an Artist in Residence at the Museum of
Glass in Tacoma from April 18 - 20.

EUROPEAN GLASS CONTEXT 2012 – CONFERENCE
European Glass Context 2012 forms part of a biennial symposium for European contemporary glass and ceramics on the island of Bornholm in Denmark. A conference will be held on 16th and 17th September 2012 which aims to spotlight and address current themes impacting contemporary European glass.
The studio glass movement is now celebrating its 50th anniversary as an independent artistic practice. Half a century is a significant amount of time, yet the movement still seems young seen in the perspective of general art history. This calls for an opportunity to take stock of and look ahead for future opportunity, relevance, positioning, development, discussion etc.
What did the studio glass movement set out to do, and what did they achieve?
How does the studio glass movement identify itself in a craft and art context?
How can glass in the future position itself in the consciousness a larger audience? And where does the responsibility to do so lie?
Do we need any changes at all in the way we think about and make glass..?
This is an open call for anyone to submit proposals for talks and suggestions for presenters and themes for this conference. Your proposal must be max. 1 page. Please enclose your current CV and/or artist statement. The deadline to submit a proposal is 15th April 2012
