ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARTISTRY OF GLASS, UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON
As part of the 2012 International Festival of Glass this one-day symposium entitled ‘Architecture and the Artistry of Glass’ explores the relationship between glass and architectural forms whether in terms of building materials or the artist wedded to architecture. The symposium brings together artists and designers with distinguished international profiles including John Lewis, Danny Lane, Brent Richards, Tomasz Urbanowicz and Keith Cummings. This symposium will take place on Friday 24th August 2012 from 10sm to 5pm. Prices: standard £130/ student £65.

For his part in the cultural Olympics Xavier White is putting out a call for submissions for equine artworks. The exhibition will coincide with the equestrian events in Greenwich Park in August 2012 and will be set in an English Baroque house in Blackheath. Selected works will be curated and exhibited in (8m x 6m) front room with a bay window (3 x 1.3m x 2m each, sash windows, suitable for glass artworks) and spacious hallway for six weeks before, during and after the Olympic equestrian events in the park.

An Award for Excellence, two Ashton Hill Awards and two Professional Development Awards for the year 2012-13. The aim of all awards is to raise standards of work within the craft, particularly in the U.K., by offering additional learning experiences to enhance the skills of potential workers. Applications are invited from anyone within the first five years of their training who want to make a career in stained glass, conservation and/or glass painting.
Successful candidates will be placed in high quality working studios where they will undertake mentored work experience on actual projects with the supervision, guidance and tuition of experienced professionals. The deadline for entry is Friday 23 March 2012, interviewing Tuesday 3 April, 2012.

The exhibition is the annual national and international glass event in this relatively new Arts Centre and will be curated by Isabel Vasseur, Director, ArtOffice, Brenda Seymour of North Norfolk District Council and Nora Gaston, Artistic Director of the Belfry Arts Centre.

The project put forward for this year's competition is for an emerging glass artist to design a feature window (approximately 1140mm wide x 3100mm high) in the new In-Patient Unit at St. Michael’s Hospice, Hereford.
Eligibility to this competition should be interpreted to embrace all those at an early stage of their career as reflected by the stipulation of studying or being within five years of completing training. The competition is organised by The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, supported by WorldSkills UK.

The Warm Glass UK Glass Prize for 2012 is now open for entries until March 20th 2012. The brief is to design and make a piece of contemporary kiln glass. For 2012, there is no specific theme for the competition. All entries must include an element of kilnformed glass. Entries in the Bullseye Glass category must solely use Bullseye Glass; no other types of glass are permitted in this category but may be used in the other two categories. The Artist's Prize is open to all glass artists, regardless of experience. The Student's Prize is open to students currently studying on an accredited full or part-time Further or Higher Education course at a college or university.

Collect 2012 presented by the Crafts Council will feature 31 UK and international galleries including the National Craft Gallery of Ireland. The highest quality craft will be showcased. The project space will return this year with ten large-scale installations by individual artists with a focus on textiles and furniture.

The conference will explore conceptual and stylistic exchanges over time, between different cultures and media. We will be working in partnership with the Scottish Glass Society to host their annual exhibition, and to celebrate the Glass Games; a nationwide campaign which will harness the energy and audiences generated by the Olympics & Paralympics in 2012 to bring the magic of contemporary glass to more people than ever before.

The International Festival of Glass is currently seeking a project leader to set up and coordinate a floating glass sculpture exhibition on the lake at Bodenham Arboretum (Worcestershire) as part of the International Festival of Glass. They are looking for a resourceful, organised, creative, flexible, self-motivated and practical person with some exhibitions/installations experience. This is a short term project role which will involve liaising between the artists, venue and the Festival organisers. The role will also entail promoting and marketing the event, coordinating setup and take down of the exhibition and organising a press day and a social evening for participating artists and visitors. The deadline for applications for this role is 7th February 2012. The fee will be £2,000. Set up of the exhibition will take place w/c 23 July with take-down w/c 28 August.

From 1st June to 30th September 2012, there'll be exhibitions, workshops, master classes and happenings that will capture the Olympic spirit and bring the magic of glass to more people than ever before. There'll also be six milestone events, connected by the handing over of a specially created glass baton – these will include a prestigious launch exhibition, a conference, and a grand finale.
There's still time to organise an event for the programme. The deadline for this is 14th February 2012. The deadline for glass artists to apply for selection to the London launch exhibition is 24th February 2012.

National Glass Centre, Sunderland at the University of Sunderland has a large post-graduate cohort (c45 students) studying MA Glass, MA Ceramics, PhD or MPhil. As part of their 2012 Glass and Ceramics postgraduate application process, they would like to invite prospective students to visit the department on 7th February 2012 (12pm – 5pm). If you are re-assessing your current professional practice, study at the University of Sunderland, one of the biggest and best-equipped providers of glass and ceramics education, might be a key route for professional development. FUNDED PHD OPPORTUNITY, UNIVERSITY OF SUNDERLAND
The University of Sunderland are now advertising for one Arts and Humanities Research Council funded PhD studentship in Applied Arts and Crafts (Glass and/or Ceramics) for EU students to start in October 2012. This is part of our Block Grant Partnership with the Northumbria University (Deadline 9th March 2012). Potential applicants will be able to discuss their research ideas with staff at the Open Day on 7th February 2012. This informal afternoon also aims to:
- Introduce the nature of the MA, PhD or MPhil degree
- Provide case studies of current students
- Explain the structure of the programmes
- Provide an overview of training and learning resources (department tour)
- Explain the financial aspects (including the AHRC Postgraduate schemes for exceptional EU candidates)
- Offer the chance for advisory interviews to discuss your future plans in relation to post-graduate study.
